This is an excerpt from a MUCH longer article (which is also part of an even longer series) on how Not Having Good Social Media Platforms Negatively Impacts Society.
Note: Keep in mind throughout all this, it's never been a question that these platforms are in fact complete and utter garbage. Even given that, the overarching point is that the billions of people who use them consistently choose to amplify that fact in every way.
It's just like how impoverished people (who know the true joys of life) are FULLY capable of simply waking up and routinely having an absolute blast while straight up grinning from ear to ear despite all of their unfavorable conditions.
The people who continue to use these awful platforms are capable of doing the exact same thing (and in the comfort of their ice-cold AC-filled home, fully stocked fridge, and a cornucopia of more distractions than they know what to do with).
Instead, with all that comfort and all that choice. They choose to incessantly whine and complain. And then do absolutely nothing about it all.
A Cage of Constraints
People really don't understand JUST how much all these shitty social media companies are REALLY holding society back. It can't even be put into words how detrimental these platforms are.
And I don't at all mean this in the generic way you always hear where people are constantly spouting on about how "social media is bad for society" and "life was better off before social media". While this is a common complaint, the people making it are incredibly dumb and completely unaware of their role in it all.
I mean by how they are purposely designed to show and incentivize mindlessness and negativity on top of never being a good place to actually let people's positive traits and tendencies flourish. They don't offer a place to express true and genuine thought and creativity. Meaningful and effort-filled work that can actually leave an impact on people's lives.
But even with this being a widely known fact, can you guess who's continuously spurring on these companies growth the most?
Realize That You're the Problem
To be clear, these platforms are absolutely despicable, have no respect for your privacy, and only care about how much money and attention they can get out of you (I could go on for ages, and I touch on this in other articles). This is beyond obvious and it has been for decades. It's the idiots who are chronically addicted to these platforms and going around trying to place the blame (i.e. act like a powerless victim rather than take their attention elsewhere and put it towards more productive means) on them that are the ones who are literally fueling their growth the MOST.
If everyone knows these platforms are as harmful, deceptive, and manipulative as can be, then the platform ceases to be the problem.
The responsibility then falls on the individual to stop using the platform.
It's that simple.
The Mindless Masses: Platform bad...
Anyone with Half a Brain: Then why do you keep using it?!?!
Alternatively, for those that still want to use it and contribute to the platforms' growth, they can still make the choice to be nice while using it (treat others how you want to be treated, give genuine compliments, spread kindness, leave thoughtful comments, stop spreading hate + doom and gloom forecasts).
I mean, imagine that.
People literally take to the comment section like your average girl who's chronically trying to dodge accountability for her life and they blame some incredibly useful and highly valuable technological advancements just because they exist.
Like some lines of code are the things that leave you seething with rage every time you hop on your favorite/most hated social media app. People don't want to take responsibility for how they treat others or how they spend their time. They just want to complain and blame everyone else for something they are continually helping to make worse.
It's like trying to blame the founding fathers of the United States of America for how awful the government currently remains. They put the framework in place; it's not their fault that PEOPLE choose to mindlessly subjugate themselves to a corrupt governing body. If you want to willingly give up your freedom and control in life, you can be damn sure there will always be hordes of people lining up waiting to take advantage of you.
It's no different with social media. If you want to mindlessly use it to waste your life away while casually spreading hate and prophecies of doom and gloom as you go about your day, then these apps will happily keep you in a cycle of that.
The average person doesn't even know a single one of those clowns who are out in Silicon Valley making these apps the shithole that they are. They aren't coming across these people while using the app, and they sure as hell aren't the ones who make up the BILLIONS of monthly active users on the sites.
It's YOU, its your friends, it's everyone you know who you claim is the reason you can't leave the platforms to begin with.
The people complaining about how awful social media is are the ones who are making it such a shitty place to be.
If people got bombarded with kind comments and messages every 5th time they opened the app would they think it was such an awful place to be? If people randomly donated you money because they liked a post you made 6 years ago, would they think it was such an awful place to be? If people regularly encouraged you to keep up the great work you were doing and asked you if there was any way they could further support your growth, would they think it was such an awful place to be?
The answer is an unequivocal NOOOOOO!
It's all the unconscious people addicted to these platforms who treat it as their dumping ground to vent and release their repressed anger from a lifetime of problems they've never bothered to deal with that truly make these platforms what they are.
Social media was never the problem; it's the people using it.
It's JUST like how money doesn't magically make celebrities and billionaire elites complete and utter assholes. These people were already the way they are; money simply amplifies that (and people's inability to see this distinction is truly sad because it works the EXACT SAME way for how they are on social media and across their entire lives).
Yes, these current centralized platforms are complete shit: YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc. but...
Social media isn't evil.
It's simply that the same people (who have always existed) now have a way for their voices to be heard.
That's it.
Nothing new, nothing groundbreaking.
You weren't aware of how thousands of people from all around the world acted, and now you are.
Congrats.
People didn't change. Your awareness of them did.
In short: Of course, these social media platforms are horrible in nearly every way. But put that aside and realize that first and foremost, what you are really seeing across all of social media is how people choose mindlessness, hate, and all around being the most generic 1-dimensional blob imaginable over anything else.
The whole evidence for this is the fact that these shitty platforms continue to exist in the first place.
People who actually valued kindness, autonomy, individuality, privacy, intentional living, mindfulness, growth, community, etc., would NEVER stand for the current shit that lines the app store shelves.
And that's what people don't realize: you're the problem.
These platforms are beyond shit, and the people who keep using them are just giving these companies a million more reasons to make things even worse.
And you can be damn sure that's EXACTLY what they'll do!
Take Back Your Life!
Which platform is holding you back the most in life?
Can you get rid of it entirely?
How will you use that time to better yourself and work towards the life you’ve always imagined?
